The molecules form a tight crystalline structure which requires a lot of energy to break it down. If the battery is charged before the sulphate has formed to this “rock hard” state the process can be reversed easily because the sulphate coating is still porous and chemically reactive.
Plates can reform with the sulphur ions being driven back into the electrolyte. When crystalline sulphation occurs heavy charging and heavy gassing can sometimes dislodge some of it, but this is not good for the battery because of high temperature rise, chances of plate buckling – mechanical damage /shorts, and heavy plate shedding causing sediment rises and more possible cell shorts.
